No Mean Typist

No Mean Typist is a cassette of some of the first Armstrong/Blackborow compositions, written and recorded in 1985/86 and originally issued in a very limited edition of about 10 copies, distributed among family and friends. A year or two later, the collection gained some notoriety  when it was bootlegged and sold from the back pages of the NME. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of its original ‘release’, we are issuing 60 more of the cassettes in a new limited edition containing the original songs and artwork.

Recorded in 1985 and 1986, the original No Mean Typist‘was a cassette of songs written by Simon Armstrong and Richard Blackborow, and recorded as demos on a reel-to-reel tape machine. In the main, all parts were played and sung by Simon and Richard, and these were some of the first songs written by the pair for what would soon become BOB. It was originally issued in an edition of about 10 and shared between family and friends.

This new edition features those original recordings remixed from the original 8-track 1/4″ reels by Simon and Richard, and issued in a very limited edition of just 60, featuring the original artwork. The cassette comes with an illustrated A4 insert containing an explanatory piece about the original release written by Simon Armstrong.  No Mean Typist will be of interest to fans who are fond of the early, pre-drummer, pre-noisy guitars BOB heard on the BOB flexi. It points the way to what was to come and has a charm of its own, but , as Simon says in his short essay ‘I’m pretty sure we got better’!
